Protest against blasphemous show

Rev Daniel Henderson led a protest against a local performance of Jesus Christ Superstar at Newry Town Hall, calling it “blasphemy against the Lord Jesus Christ.”
The protest took place outside the venue during the show’s final night; around 45-50 Free Presbyterians sang hymns and distributed Gospel tracts to attendees.
Alongside ministers from Mourne and Mount Merrion Free Presbyterian Churches, Henderson decried the portrayal of Jesus as a “burnt-out celebrity” in the rock opera, which he argued misrepresented the Saviour’s true mission, as reported by The County Down Outlook.Henderson stated: “The production makes a mockery of the Saviour and the Bible record of His life.”

He added, “Jesus Christ was not a ‘Superstar’. He is saviour. He came to die for our sins.”

Rev Henderson had protested against the local production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, directed by David Cunningham, in 2019.

“The storyline depicts Jesus Christ as being a burnt-out celebrity that went to the cross in order to keep His fame. The production, from start to finish, is offensive to Bible-believing, born-again Christians and, as local Free Presbyterians, we felt it was our duty to raise a voice of opposition against something that tries to mock the Lord Jesus. Let me be clear. Jesus Christ was not a ‘Superstar’. Jesus Christ is Saviour. He came to this world to die upon the cross so that we could be saved from our sins – and the Bible says: ‘For whosoever shall call upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved’”, the pastor had said then.

Rev Henderson was born in Liverpool before his family moved to Yorkshire eight years ago. He started his ministry training Whitefield College of the Bible in Belfast four years ago.
