Fr Raimund Beisteiner, a 59-year-old Catholic priest, has died while celebrating Mass on Sunday in Wiesmath, a district of Wiener Neustadt, in Austria.
Shortly after administering communion, Fr Beisteiner was about to return the hosts to the tabernacle when he “suddenly” collapsed, according to a statement from the Archdiocese of Vienna.
Despite immediate and compassionate efforts by those present to save him, his life could not be spared. He passed away peacefully inside the church, surrounded by the faithful who cherished him deeply.
The mayor of Wiesmath, Erich Rasner, was attending the mass with other believers and witnessed the dramatic scenes in church.
The priest was known for his gentle spirit, unwavering faith and dedication to his parishioners.
The shock in Wiesmath at the loss of the popular pastor is great. Fr Beisteiner had shaped the spiritual life of the parish for almost two decades and was highly regarded far beyond the community.
Mayor Rasner called Fr Beisteiner an “extremely conscientious, sensitive priest” and also emphasised the personal loss of a friendship that had grown over many years.
The fondness of the population for their priest was evident at a prayer service organised at short notice, which was attended by numerous priests from the deanery as well as Archbishop Josef Grünwidl.
The funeral of Fr Beisteiner will take place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, in the parish church of Wiesmath. The rosary will begin at 9:30 am., followed by the Requiem Mass at 10 am.
